For example, Amity Online currently asks Indian applicants for at least 40% in graduation, so a candidate with 45% can meet its published marks requirement. IGNOU, NMIMS, Manipal University Jaipur and Uttaranchal University generally ask for 50% for the general category and allow 45% for specified reserved categories. UPES Online has another route under which candidates with at least two years of work experience may qualify with 45% marks.

Why is there no single 45% or 50% rule for every Online MBA?

This is where many admission articles become misleading.

You may read that "UGC requires 50% for every Online MBA." That is too broad.

UGC's regulations for ODL and online programmes require, among other things, that a dual-mode university keep the entry-level qualifications for its online programme aligned with its corresponding conventional programme. Universities therefore publish their own programme-specific admission requirements within the applicable regulatory framework.

That is why current MBA eligibility can look different from one university to another:

• one programme may accept graduates with 40%;

• another may require 50%;

• another may offer 45% only to specified reserved categories;

• another may relax the requirement when the applicant has relevant work experience.

The university's current admission page or prospectus should be the final reference before paying an application or programme fee.

Online MBA options to check if you have 45% marks

We reviewed current official university pages on 18 September 2026. Admission criteria can change between admission sessions, so treat the table as a shortlist for verification rather than a permanent rule.

This comparison is about eligibility only. It is not a ranking of the universities.

If you are general category with 45%

Do not assume that your MBA plan is over simply because you are below 50%.

Start with programmes whose current eligibility actually accepts your academic profile. Amity Online is a clear example at the time of this review because its standard Indian-student MBA eligibility page states a 40% minimum in graduation.

LPU is another programme worth checking directly. Its current Online MBA pages list a bachelor's degree in any discipline or equivalent as the academic eligibility and do not show a percentage threshold in the eligibility text we reviewed. That does not mean every 45% application is automatically approved; document verification and the rules applicable to the admission session still matter.

If you already have at least two years of professional experience, UPES Online is relevant because its current MBA eligibility provides a route for candidates with 45% marks and the required experience.

This is a better approach than submitting applications to several universities and finding out later that you do not meet their marks criterion.

If you belong to a reserved category

A number of universities publish a 45% threshold for specified reserved categories.

IGNOU's current Online MBA page asks for a bachelor's degree of at least three years with 50% marks, reduced to 45% for candidates belonging to a reserved category.

NMIMS lists 50% at graduation level and 45% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates.

Manipal University Jaipur's current Online MBA eligibility similarly shows 50% in graduation and 45% for reserved categories.

Uttaranchal University states 50% for the general category and 45% for the reserved category.

The important part is the wording used by the particular university. Do not assume that one university's definition of an eligible reserved category automatically applies to another university. Your category certificate and other supporting documents may be checked during admission.

Can work experience help if you have only 45%?

Sometimes.

Work experience does not universally replace the academic eligibility requirement, but a university may create an admission route that takes experience into account.

UPES Online currently states 50% as its standard graduation requirement and provides relaxation to 45% for candidates with a minimum of two years of work experience.

This distinction matters for someone who graduated several years ago with 45%-49% and has since built a professional career.

You should still check the exact definition of acceptable work experience. An offer letter, experience certificate, relieving letter or other employment documentation may be required depending on the university.

Do you need CAT, MAT or another entrance exam with 45%?

Not necessarily.

Many standard Online MBA programmes use direct academic eligibility rather than CAT or MAT.

For example, IGNOU's current Online MBA page states the bachelor's-degree and marks criteria without listing an entrance test as an admission requirement. Amity's standard route is also based on graduation eligibility, although its current page says candidates below 40% may be required to take an admission test.

Do not confuse "no CAT required" with "no eligibility check." Universities still verify academic records and other admission documents.

What if my percentage is exactly 45%?

Use the percentage shown or calculated according to your university's official rules.

Do not round 44.5% to 45% yourself and assume you are eligible.

If your marksheet uses CGPA, obtain or follow the official CGPA-to-percentage conversion prescribed by the institution that awarded your bachelor's degree. If no percentage is printed, the admitting university may ask for an official conversion formula or certificate.

The safest approach is to send your complete marksheets for an eligibility check before making a non-refundable payment.

Does a backlog or gap year stop Online MBA admission?

A past academic backlog does not automatically mean that you can never pursue an Online MBA.

What normally matters at admission is whether the bachelor's degree has been successfully completed and whether you meet the university's final marks and documentation requirements.

A study gap or career gap is also different from academic eligibility. Universities may ask for additional information, but an age or career gap should not be confused with having an incomplete graduation result.

The exact document list varies, so use the university's current application instructions rather than an old checklist found on a third-party website.

Do not choose an Online MBA only because it accepts 45%

Getting admission is the first filter. It should not be your only filter.

Suppose University A accepts 45% immediately but its class timings, examination system or total fee do not suit you. University B may have a slightly different admission route but a programme structure that fits your job and career plan better.

Before paying, check the programme's recognition for the admission session, total payable fee, specialisation, examination format, live-class schedule, academic support and refund policy.

UGC-DEB publishes the recognition or entitlement status of universities and programmes offered in online mode. UGC also states that eligible UG and PG degrees awarded through recognised ODL or online programmes are treated as equivalent to the corresponding conventional awards.

A practical way to shortlist with 45%

If a student comes to us with 45% marks, we would first separate the case into three questions.

Is 45% accepted for the student's category?

Does the university offer any experience-based or university-specific eligibility route?

Does the programme itself make sense after eligibility is confirmed?

This avoids a common mistake: choosing the first university willing to accept the application.

A useful shortlist might look very different for a fresh BCom graduate with 45%, a working professional with seven years of experience and a reserved-category candidate with the same graduation score.

The percentage is the same. Their actual options are not.
